Nick St. George appeared on Unscripted AM on KOLR 10/FOX 49 in Springfield, MO to talk about National Donut Day. The show is hosted by Jeremy Rabe, Maddie Conklin, Blake Haynes and Tom Trtan from Ozarks Live.
The hosts welcome Nick, who had been up all night making as many fresh donuts by hand as he could. They discuss what makes his family-owned, locally-owned business special. Jeremy shared a story about a friend from Florida who makes St. George's Donuts her first stop twice a year when visiting Springfield for business, demonstrating the shop's reputation and loyal following.
Nick explains that his parents Charles & Katy started St. George's Donuts in 1971, and he was literally born into the business. His mother kept his crib in the back of the shop when he was just two weeks old. Nick takes pride in carrying on his parents' legacy, “standing on the shoulders of my mom and dad and continuing to make donuts the old-fashioned way”.
The business celebrates National Donut Day by offering a free ring-shaped donut to anyone who visits, no purchase necessary. Nick mentioned how they let their Facebook supporters vote on seasonal flavors like the current lemon poppy seed option.
During the interview, Nick showcases the variety of donuts they offer, including cake donuts with patriotic sprinkles, massive handmade cinnamon rolls (bigger than your head), traditional glazed donuts, Oreo-topped varieties, old-fashioned donuts, and long johns. The hosts enthusiastically sample the donuts on air, with glazed donuts being identified as their best seller, while Nick admits his favorite is whatever hot donut is coming fresh out of the fryer.
St. George's Donuts has two locations - one on East Sunshine in front of Sam's Club in Springfield, and another in Ozark near Lambert's restaurant, both open until 2 PM daily.
